A New Era

Posted by Maureen Friday, September 03, 2010

I have just completed a year of service as an Americorps VISTA (Volunteer In Service To America) with a local organization called Southtown Foundation, and specifically as the Project Manager for Tulips on Troost.

Here's the little blurb I wrote for my organization's newsletter by way of farewell:

Serving as the Americorps VISTA for Tulips on Troost and Southtown over the past year has led to a deepened understanding about the city I call home. I have had my eyes opened to parts of Kansas City that I'd never seen, opportunities that I didn't know existed for business owners, consumers and residents, and the immense numbers of dedicated community leaders who give every ounce of their time and energy to better our city. I have learned more about how our city works, from City Hall to a little office at 68th & Troost that holds a lot of sway. I have met the fantastic people of Troost Avenue and surrounding who have welcomed me and taught me about their experiences.

I am very thankful for the opportunity I have had over the past year to serve the Troost Avenue community. I have been inspired by the dedication of KC's citizens to making it a better place for all, and I hope to carry that vision on to wherever I go. Thank you for the chance to serve alongside you over the past year!

So. Just wanted to share that little tidbit of my life with my greater blog following. Not that I have one. But just in case. And now I enter into a new era - an era of unemployment (read: living off my sugar daddy's income). ;) I'm hoping to find a part-time job to help make ends meet for now, as Toby & I explore what's next for us.

That said, it's a new era for me as it feels like Fall is being ushered in, as Toby & I celebrate our first anniversary, and as I find a new routine in daily life. All is well.
