Where a recession is good for business..

The more I hear about the chain reaction of the bad economy, the more I realize how complex our society is. Areas of life and economy are affected that I never would have imagined. However, I finally heard about one particular business (and I'm sure there are others) that is booming because of the recession--shoe cobblers. No one's buying new shoes--they're getting them repaired! Get this, at the time of the Great Depression, there were over 120,000 shoe repair shops in the US; today there are only 7,000. Whoa. But over the past 6 months, suddenly the shoe cobbler industry is booming. It's kind of fantastic. Read bout it here, in the Wall Street Journal. And look up your local cobbler (Here are some in KC) next time you're looking for a new pair of shoes!

And here's a weird comic:

We're cobbling everything these days, even economic stimuli.

it's all about computer games in australia, even is looking for a bit of escapism i suppose.

At least in Mongolia a goat is still a goat!

Why does the cobbler throw away his hammer in the last frame? Has he given up?

No, he's cobbling that guy's tie. You don't need a hammer to cobble a tie. But that's why this comic is so weird. Why would a cobbler be a black tie establishment in the first place? Pffff.
